8 Tips for Cutting Cost in the Kitchen

On average the American family will throw away 100 pounds, or $500.00 worth of food every year.

This is a tragedy on so many levels.  Pollution, landfills, people who go without food.  Pick your poison. They are all valid reasons to act wisely in the kitchen.

So is your budget.

Being frugal in the kitchen can cut your budget and still allow you to eat healthy.

Here are just a few tips to help you cut cost in the kitchen:

  • Meal Plan – I started meal planning about 2 years ago and I cannot tell you what a difference it has made. Now, instead of making a chicken and tossing the left overs a week later because they were forgotten about, we have chicken Saturday night, chicken pot pie Sunday and chicken salad sandwiches for lunch Monday.  Plus, I make bone both/stock with the carcass.  This has been the biggest money save for us.
  • Scale back your recipes –  If you’re feeding a family of 2.5 like us, you do not need to make a 9×13 pan of macaroni and cheese when an 8×8 is plenty with leftovers for lunch.
  • Shop with a list – I am surprised how many people I meet that don’t shop with a list.  Writing down what you need for the recipes you’ll make (see tip #1) will help you to buy less of what you don’t need and ensure you have everything you do need.
  • Check your pantry first – I have tendency to forget this part.  Before you buy check to see what you have hiding in the back of your pantry.  Don’t by more mustard if you already have two unopened bottles.  (been there don that!)
  • Keep your food organized – It’s hard to check your pantry or freezer if stuff is tossed in haphazardly.  Keeping things neat is key to finding what you need and knowing what you have.  Another great way to keep organized is to keep a pantry and freezer inventory.  I use  List Planit’s freezer inventory list even now in the camper.  Our upright freezer is in my brother in law’s garage so it is crucial that I know what I have.  It saves me from running to their house all the time for nothing or just to see what’s there before I go shopping.
  • Buy bulk when you can – It is cheaper per ounce to buy a 29oz canister of coffee then a 16oz bag.  You might pay more up front but the per ounce cost is less. Same goes for toilet paper, paper towels, etc.
  • Name brand isn’t always necessary –   There are some good quality off-brand items that are way less expensive.  Aldi’s brand of paper towels work just fine as do their napkins and paper plates.  Does anyone really care if you’re using Brawny (and if they do tell them to bring their own paper towels.)
  • Shop OnlineAmazon, Vitacost and all have reasonable rates on various food and health products.    It is good to do some comparison shopping though especially with Amazon.  Some sellers have a great price for the product but their shipping is outrageous.  If I can’t buy it at my local natural food store I can usually find it at Vitacost.   2. Buying in bulk MAY be cheaper but you need to check to see if it REALLY is cheaper per pound or ounce or unit…..

  3. Buy Simpler. I have found that for seasonings and mixes (taco seasoning, ranch dressing mix, spice mixes) buy the basic ingredients and then mix it up yourself. You can buy the basics (garlic powder, chili powder, etc.) in bulk to save and then blend as you like. Bonuses are you know exactly what’s in it and you use up your seasonings faster so they are fresher when you use them.

    • This is so true! And with homemade, especially taco seasoning you can adjust the “heat” level to your family’s liking.

  4. I have to agree that meal planning, shopping with a list, and buying in bulk are some of the best ways to save money on groceries. I, too, cook a whole chicken once a week, and make several meals & stock from that one chicken. Checking the pantry before shopping is also excellent advice.
