You Can’t Have My Jesus…..Get Your Own

personal relationship with Christ

Sounds pretty selfish doesn’t it? Sounds like a kid with a doll who doesn’t want to share.

But nothing could be further from the truth.  I want you to know Jesus, I want you to have a relationship with Him that moves beyond fire insurance and into a personal, two-way, face to face relationship.

I don’t want want you to live off my Jesus or my relationship with Him.  You need to get your own relationship.

Why an individual relationship is so important

When I think about a relationship with Jesus I think about a mom (or dad) with multiple children. (Think big, think the Duggars.)  You yourself may be a mom of many or you may come from a large family.  Think of your relationship with your children or that your mom or dad.  Chances are the parent-child relationship is different with each child. There are probably many commonalities that make the foundation of the relationship like values, beliefs, discipline and guidance but there are probably also many different things about each relationship.

I doubt Michelle and Jim Bob have the exact same relationship with each child.  Each relationship varies based on that child’s gifts, strengths and weaknesses.  A child gifted in organization may not need as much help learning how to properly keep their room. The child who is hands-on quickly picks up how to construct a table or chairs or the bookworm learns early how to read.  Even just left-brained verses right-brained children will need different relationships to grow to all they are called to be.

So if our earthly parent-child relationships can vary so much don’t you think the same is true for our spiritual parent-child relationship?  Abba Father knows us, inside and out deeper than our parents and He knows exactly how we learn best, what stretches us and what will touch our hearts.

This is why we need our own relationship with Him.

You see, I can learn from my pastors or speakers, through books or from friends but ultimately I need a relationship with the Lord to guide me so that I can know what He wants for my life.  Any prophetic word spoken over me, any teaching I hear or any word of knowledge should be offered back to Him during prayer so you can ask Him what you are to do with the information.

No one else can do that for you.

No one on earth knows you better than your Daddy.

This is also why we can’t play holy spirit junior to those around us.  (Something I often need to remind myself of). If we have a word for someone or we are offering up advice we must remember that we cannot force someone to follow our advice or grab hold of the word, that is their choice.

 Common Ground Through Kinship

Thinking back to your large family, or the Duggars there is always commonality amongst siblings.  So it is with our Father.  No matter how the Lord speaks to us, everything He says will lead back to Biblical truth.  God speaks to us in an individual manner but the underlying truth of His word does not change.  He can speak to me about giving grace through my son and to someone else He could use a chance encounter with a stranger at the mall, still another person He could illustrate grace through nature or a movie.

We should not all be doing things exactly the same, if we are I suggest that we are walking though life dead. We’re not living for the living God we’re living to follow rules, someone else’s rules.  A skirt-wearing tattooed gal saved and on fire for the Lord is just as powerful as a pants-wearing pastor’s wife giving up her job to follow the Lord’s call on her life.

Why?

Because they love their Pappa, they listen to Him and follow His call for their life.  They aren’t trying to live each other’s lives.  These two women are sisters in Christ, related through the blood of Jesus even if they have never met.

I challenge you today, if you are living through someone else’s Jesus, go get your own.  Seek Him out through the Bible, worship, quite time and conversation with Him.

I hope to be expounding more on this in the near future because I can honestly say, if it had not been for learning how to have a conversation with God I don’t how I’d have gotten through these last 10 months living in a camper and walking through the transition from a working mom to being a stay at home mom.

I pray that the words I type on this site are an encouragement to you but I also pray that you find an intimate relationship with Christ for yourself.

How is your relationship with Christ?  Have you found your relationship or are you living off of someone else’s?
