You Can Make It (A Collection of Awesome DIY Home Essentials)

Whether you really want to be a DIY’er and are just getting started or you’re just out of something and need a quick fix, these awesome, simple homemade essentials are great.

Why Homemade?

Why bother making stuff homemade when Wal-Mart is in every other town and carries everything you need?  There are lots of reasons to make things at home.

Freedom from The World After realizing I had taken for granted the art of homemade I was intrigued at the idea that most of what we buy we can make.  Knowing that I didn’t have to be dependent on large companies for all of my every-day needs like cleaning supplies and food made me feel as though I had taken a small step away from consumerism and into the world of being independent from “the system” we live in.  Personally, this is part of in the world, not of the world for me.  I don’t need to be dependent on the “latest, greatest” to survive. I can use simple, natural ingredients and make everyday things if I need or want to. I am not living removed from society, but I am stepping away from the idea that says we must have/eat/use a certain thing to be acceptable and relevant.

Knowledge –  When I buy baking soda and vinegar I know what’s in the containers: baking soda and vinegar.  When I buy Super Duper Scrub Cleaner I know what’s in it too: chemicals.  When I buy canned tomatoes, spices and sweeteners to make spaghetti sauce I know what is in the end product.  I can control the level of spice and sugar, and I know I’m using quality sugar and spices free of MSG.  I like knowing what I’m using when it comes to food or household products.

Know How -There’s a sense of simplicity that comes to me when I figure out how to make something that I didn’t know I could make from scratch.  Knowing how to make things will also be helpful if ever there is a day when we can’t just run to the store (or if we move to the middle of nowhere Alaska!)

Lexie from Lexie Naturals shares other valid reasons to make things at home. The post is worth the read and there are great links too.

Here’s a collection of simple things you can try on your way to living a more independent, free lifestyle.

Over 20 Simple Homemade Essentials

Cleaners Essentials

Dish Washer Detergent – Lexie Naturals (I have not tried this exact recipe but most I’ve tried did not work for me. The more I research, I think it’s our water, which is naturally hard and softened via water softener plus treated for bacteria.)  I’d love to know if you use it and if it works for you!

Glass-Top Stove Cleaner – A Proverbs 31 Wife

Washing Soda – It Takes Time  So this is AMAZING!  Washing soda is a staple for me. I use it in my laundry detergent and other cleaning recipes.  And if you can’t make this, well, you might be out of luck!

How to Clean Your Dishwasher Naturally – Natural Living Mama     I sooo need to do this!!  **Update** I did this and wow! To quote the three-year old “That kinda looks like pudding.”  I found a few globs of yuck down under the filter.  It’s no wonder the dishwasher didn’t seem to be cleaning well.  And….my dishwasher is only 6 months old!

Sour Cream – Creative Christian Mama

Katchup – Sweet Kisses and Dirty Dishes

Bread Crumbs – Me!

Cream of Soup Mix – Road to 31

Over time, I have started to make more and more things from scratch or by hand because I enjoy it.  I like to see what I can create and see the results of putting together natural, nontoxic ingredients to make everyday essentials like soft scrub cleanser, laundry detergent and more.
