5 Myths About Chiropractic Care

myths about chiropractic care

There’s nothing like a good spinal manipulation to get the body back in line.

Like many people, I tend to carry my stress in my shoulders and being adjusted at my chiropractor’s office helps relieve the stiffness and tightness in my neck.  My hips also like to get out of whack so going for an adjustment keeps me well lined up and walking must straighter.

I didn’t always love the chiropractor.

Growing up I remember hearing something along the lines of “One wrong move and a chiropractor can mess you up for life.”

I supposed this could be true but then again one wrong drug from the family doctor, one slip of the surgeon’s knife and you could be messed up for life too.

This brings us to the these 5 myths about chiropractic care that I have believed or heard:

Myth #1 – Chiropractic Care is Dangerous

Yes accidents can occur.  In this study they found 23 published deaths related to chiropractic adjustments since 1934.  Meanwhile, 55 deaths occurred from foreign bodies left in during a surgical procedures in the US between 2000-2002.

There is a real chance that something could go wrong during an adjustment.  But the small percentage of possibility makes me believe the benefits of chiropractic care outweigh the risks.

Myth #2 – A Chiropractic Adjustment Will Hurt

Sometimes, if I’ve put off an adjustment for too long it will be a bit uncomfortable but I can’t say it has ever hurt.  There’s sometimes pressure but never pain.

I find adjustments to be rather relaxing.  My chiropractor usually uses a massager and electric stimulation before an adjustment which helps to loosen things up before the actual manipulation of the spine.

Myth #3 – Heath Insurance Doesn’t Cover Alternatives Like Chiropractic Care

Many alternative health options are not covered under today’s major medical insurance providers but thankfully chiropractic care isn’t one of them.   Most major insurance providers allow for coverage.  Our plan gives a specific number of adjustments per year.  Even medical sharing program Medi-Share has a clause for chiropractic care.

Myth #4 – I’m Pregnant So I Can’t Get Adjusted

Not so!

Chiropractic care is one of the best things I found to naturally relieve my back and hip pain during the last few weeks of my pregnancy. An adjustment can also better align your pelvis for birth.

Be sure to tell your chiropractor that you’re pregnant so they can adjust you’re treatments accordingly.  Some chiropractors may change how they adjust you or the pre-adjustment procedures they use while you’re with child.  My chiropractor did not do any electric stimulation and obviously did not make me lie on my stomach after a certain point in the pregnancy.

Myth #5 – Once I Start Getting Adjusted I Will Always Have to Go

I admit, once you pop you can’t stop! But not because you don’t have a choice.  Going to the chiropractor is totally optional.  You can have one treatment and never return if you choose.  You’ll probably want to return once you notice the difference in how your body feels after an adjustment.

When I first went to the chiropractor after a car accident 15 years ago they recommended I go for 5 adjustments to get me back in line but the choice was mine. After those five visits I didn’t return to a chiropractor for 5 years.  I didn’t really think about it until my husband suggested I try it to relieve my constant headaches.

If your chiropractor wants to schedule follow up visits and you’d rather wait, just tell them that when you check out.  They should respect your decision.  If not, perhaps seek out a new provider that will honor your wishes.  After all chiropractic care is your choice and totally optional.

So tell me, do you do chiropractic? Why or why not?

Loooove my chiropractor! He is an amazing man! He has completely taken care of my migraines! $25 every 5-6 and no migraines and no scary pain medication, I say win-win!

Exactly! When I start to feel the tension or get a headache 2 days in a row I know it’s time. Actually, I know it’s time before that but sometimes I put it off!

  2. I need to check and see if chiropractic care is covered under our insurance. I always assumed it wasn’t. Hopefully I was wrong.

  3. I LOVE going to the chiropractor. Just went today, actually! My parents have taken my siblings and me since we were infants (it’s very good for babies to get adjusted right away because their spines can get out of whack during birth). I’ve never struggled from major allergies or chronic headaches, and although I have some mild spine issues regular chiropractic care has helped those from getting worse and has improved the problem (a curvature of the spine).

I’d recommend chiropractic care for anyone. It won’t hurt, and it will almost certainly help with many, many other problems that are caused by pinched nerves.

  4. I don’t visit a chiropractor on a regular basis, mainly because it hasn’t been covered on our insurance, but I do think our insurance this year covers it. I should check for sure though!

Thanks so much for sharing these myths on our wellness Wednesday link-up. I’ll be sharing on facebook and pinning 🙂
