Restoring the Lost Petal

Shaped By God: You Are More Than What You See

Shaped by God: More Than The Mirror

This has been one of those weeks.

Lost my patience every day, yelled at my son, had a bad attitude, got made at the computer, wished I didn’t have to “work”, lost my peace over tax preparation and had an eye opening moment after taking a selfie in the bathroom.

I know what you’re thinking and no, it wasn’t that pouty-faced, hip popped selfie all the 20 something girls take for Instagram. This was a different trending selfie. This was one of those selfies seen all over Facebook posted by It Works! reps before someone tries a wrap. Believe me, you will not catch my selfie on Facebook.

I don’t look long in the mirror at myself. Not because I hate what I see or have a bad self-image. I decided a long time ago that I would not nitpick myself anymore. Yes I want to shed 15 pounds, yes I want to tone up, yes I want to do 60 burpees by Valetine’s Day.  Being at peace with myself does not mean I don’t want better. It means as I press toward the goal I am at peace with who I am today. After all, I am more that what I see.

This failing flesh is only a small part of me. One of three; body, soul, spirit.

We can hustle hard hours in an attempt to shed fat, build muscle and plank for 15 minutes but at the end of life, and life will end, we won’t be judged on our physical appearances. Keeping our bodies in shape brings glory to God as we take care of the flesh He gave us but we must remember the other two parts of our being: soul and spirit.

If my body is svelte but I spew angry words, nasty glares and vomit bad attitude all over the room and I really fit? Certainly I’m not fit to be around. Training and disciple are for more than muscles. It is for our mouth and our mind too.

I have a mouth muscle problem, it is too loose. It’s flabby and out of shape and it can’t keep the words in.

My spirit is saggy. It doesn’t stand at attention guarding my heart and my mind. It gets weary when it must lead all day and often flops to the background as my flesh takes over. I guess this flesh is more fit than I thought.

” Lord, what fools these mortals be!” ~ Puck, Midsummer Nigh’s Dream

Long after Jesus walked dusty roads Shakespeare penned these words yet I wonder if Jesus thought it long before and long after. We push and strive for earthly things forgoing other aspects of life that reach far past this mortal skin we live in.

I have focused on my physical, which I’ve let go a bit too long, but I need to balance all three of aspects of my being.  This week was my reminder. I need to dig into Gods word, spend time with Jesus and reach others  if I want my entire being to thrive.

Enhance Your Focus

What goals do you have that you aren’t reaching? Have you at least made progress? It’s not too late to start writing goals for this year, next year the rest of your life. More importantly, it’s not too late to enhance your focus. Do not grow weary in wanting to weigh less. Especially if you’r weight is a hindrance to doing what God has called you to do. Beyond the scale see what God sees. You are more than what is in the mirror. Your mind, will and emotions need disciple and exercise. Your spirit needs conditioning and endurance training for the race you are running.

Faithful Finishlines has kept me going this month, working on my burpees and eating healthier. The support and encouragement of the team is amazing. Besides working on fitness goals the ladies encourage us with great printables and even scriptures via text message. It’s nice to get an unexpected text every once and awhile reminding us of God’s love and support.

Fitness is more than physical. As you work on your goals, don’t neglect the rest of you.

After all, you are more than what you see.
