Practical Ways to Spend Time with God

I go around the same mountain in my head every couple of months.  The I’m Not Spending Enough Time With God mountain.

I ask myself……..

How do I fit it spending more time with God?

 spending time with god

I know the answers but sometimes I need to hear them (or read them again).  So this post is as much for me as it is for you.

There is no right or wrong amount of time to spend with God.  In reality, if we are living in the fullest of relationship with Him we know we are walking with Him every moment and we have access to Him whenever we want.  But personally, I feel it is important to spend focused time with Jesus.

Be Flexible

Spending more time with God is a good thing, but sometimes the vision we have of quiet time is far from reality.

Quiet time. This involves two things….Quiet.  Time.

When you have children those two things can be precious commodities.   I like to have quiet time in the morning, at 5:30, alone….well, sometimes the dog joins me.  I prefer to snuggle up on the couch with a blanket and with one dim light on.  That is my idea of quiet time with God.

Some days it’s at 10:30 while Wyatt is watching his 30 minutes of TV or racing cars across the living room floor complete with loud sound effects.  I fight against this.  I want literal quiet time. Quiet. Time.  But that doesn’t happen every day.  So my choice is to go those days with “no” time with God or to figure out another way to read/study and pray.

 Schedule It

I have two very special earthly friends who we try to make it a point to talk or get together regularly.  Why? Because if we weren’t intentional about it we probably wouldn’t do it.  It may seem sad to say we must schedule time together but that’s how life is.  We must make time for what is important and if that means scheduling things, so be it.

I sometimes even write it on my daily list of things I need to do.  Not to be religious or feel good after I check it off this but so I see it written there and I stay focused. Keep your intentions in check.  If you’re scheduling it just to cross it off you’re heart isn’t in the right place.

Bathroom  Time

So what else do you have to do while you’re in the shower…or taking care of other business.  Use those quiet moments in the bath or shower to pray and ask God what He wants to say to you.  In the early years after I started taking my walk with the Lord seriously I kept an old boombox (yes, it was that old) in the bathroom and I’d listen to Christian radio or old tapes of Sandi Patty while I showered and got ready for work.  It was a good way to start my day.

Steal Free Moments

Sometimes when Wyatt is acting like he has eaten an entire bag of cotton candy or otherwise being a typical 3 year old boy I need a few moments to regroup.  Once I get him focused on an activity like painting or coloring I take those moments and prayer.  Obviously this is not intense warfare prayer but I know I need to reach out to Daddy because my flesh may be loosing patience, getting short-tempered or feeling stressed.  Sometimes it’s in those precious moments that we feel His presence even more than the hour in our prayer closet or quiet place.  Sometimes the moments we need Him most are the moments we remember.

Drive Time

This is hard for me right now because Wyatt is at that age of observation and wonder with things he sees so he asks lots of questions.  But if you don’t have kids yet, or have little ones that sleep as soon as the engine fires use your time in the vehicle wisely.  Worship music (my fav), books on CD or mp3 and even silence so you can ask God to speak and hear Him answer.

When I was working the days I didn’t carpool were often times very special to me.  Countless mornings at the office included reapplying eyeliner or taking it all off after crying to the Lord.

Here are a few other ways to spend time with God:

  • While nursing
  • Before bed
  • While folding laundry or doing the dishes
  • While mowing the grass (one of my favorites!)
  • Take a walk – if you’re a working mama, take some time at lunch to walk and talk to God

Your turn, what unique ways do you find to spend time with Daddy?
