7 Things You Can Do With Nutritional Yeast

nutritional yeast

A while back I watched an instructional video and the presenter mentioned nutritional yeast.  It was a quick mention but it caught my attention and I wondered, what is nutritional yeast? How can I use it? Is it beneficial?

I did some research and bought a bag from my local natural foods store.  Here’s what I found and my experience with nutritional yeast.

Nutritional Yeast is…..

Not what you think.  Nutritional yeast is not like yeast you use to leaven bread. Nutritional yeast is grown on some type of sugary medium such as sugarcane or molasses.  Once harvested, it is heated and killed (deactivated) and processed down to a powder or flake format. Event though it is grown on a sugary medium there is no sugar in nutritional yeast.  It is also gluten free, dairy free and low in sodium and fat.

I’ve read conflicting information that it is high in Vitamin B12.  It seems as though some brands are fortified with B12 which means B12 is added to nutritional yeast and the final packaged product is nutrition yeast and Vitamin B12.

I think it has a cheesy taste and others describe it as “nutty.”

What You Can Do With Nutritional Yeast

My favorite use is to add a few teaspoons of Nutritional Yeast to my homemade Hamburger Helper.  A few other uses are:

  • Add to macaroni and cheese
  • Sprinkle on your pizza
  • Mix some in with your mashed potatoes
  • Add a little to your cheesy broccoli casserole (recipe found in The Veggie Book)
  • Add it to popcorn for a cheesy taste
  • Substitute it for Parmesan cheese
  • Make a cheesy dip like crab dip or bean dip and add a tablespoon of Nutritional Yeast

Have you ever heard of nutritional yeast? What’s your favorite way to use it?

  1. Nutritional Yeast: I was introduced to this wonderful product years ago when I was very ill and was changing my food habits. I now use it with my olive oil/balsamic vinegar/feta cheese on top of tossed salad. Then one day, air popped pop corn needed another ingredient. So for years it is the melted butter, nutritional yeast and sea salt, and the two little dogs have to lick up the kettle when I am finished eating my non GMO pop corn. where I need the cheese flavor, it is the nutritional yeast. Learned when I was a very young girl I needed vitamin B badly and this is one of the ways to get it.

  2. I use nutritional yeast because it is good for me and my family. The one thing I can’t figure out is why I keep reading that it has a cheesy flavor. It doesn’t taste close to cheese. More like a vomit. I have to mix it with other strong flavored things for my family to not notice it. Maybe our taste buds don’t work very well

    • I had to laugh because I think it smells a bit “strange” but I don’t think it tastes that way. Thanks for being honest!

    • I agree with Darcee! I keep trying to like it, but it tastes neither nutty nor cheesy to me. I’ve tried different brands, etc., but just can’t make myself like Brewers Yeast!

  3. I use it as “Parm” on many dish but i pre-mix mine, nutritional yeast with a touch of sea salt and seasame seeds. That how i was introduced to it, and to this day still enjoy this lil mix
